One Grain

The animated version could not start on this device, so here is the story as text.

Nature

Magma

Deep underground, molten rock cools slowly. Quartz begins to crystallize.

Granite

The crystal is locked inside granite, waiting for uplift and erosion.

River

Weathering frees the grain. Running water carries it downstream.

Coast

Waves sort and tumble it, moving it along the shore.

Desert

Wind lifts it in short hops, rounding and frosting its surface.

Again

Buried. Cemented into stone. Lifted. Freed. Buried again, until heat and pressure turn the sandstone into quartzite.

Industry

Quarry

The cycle breaks. Silica-rich rock is taken from the ground.

Furnace

Quartz meets carbon at extreme heat. Oxygen leaves; silicon remains.

Purity

Converted, distilled, deposited again. The silicon becomes hyperpure.

Crystal

Melted above 1,414 °C, it is drawn upward from a single seed.

Wafer

The ingot is ground, sliced, etched, and polished into mirror-flat wafers.

Light

Light projects a pattern onto a photosensitive layer.

Now

Chip

Layer by layer, patterns become transistors and the connections between them.

Millions of years to arrive. Nanoseconds to act.

Display

Silicon computes. Pixels turn its signals into light.

Even the glass in front of the pixels is mostly silica.

You are looking at sand right now.
